the story
Shaun has been making and playing electronic dance music since his early teens, and his deeply loving appreciation for many styles, genres and techniques is felt by listeners and dance floors everywhere. After decades of various software and hardware setups, Shaun has developed his sound and style to his heart’s liking, and beyond. Deep sea atmospheres, cosmic chord progressions, etheric melodies with tight thumping drums and rich bass riffs beneath. From downtempo to house, techno to electro, juke to drum and bass, Shaun’s simple yet intricate production style and technique can be heard in whatever he makes or plays.
Natural environments and authentic energetic exchanges are vital sources of inspiration to Shaun, so you’ll often find him playing in the woods or at the beach. Using two Akai Forces, Shaun performs original songs live, and mixes from one to the next as he does when DJing. Each song’s key is decided by what inner energy center, or Chakra, is seeking expression. Being a very reflective and intuitive person, he finds resonance writing in C (Root), Dm (Sacral), Am (Third Eye) and B (Crown) quite often. Expression of these inner energies is an act of self care, an aspect of himself he seeks to share with anyone.
Shaun’s early inspiration was 90’s techno, industrial and trance music. Massive appreciation for Depeche Mode, NIN, Run Lola Run, PlayHouse and Perfecto Records to name a few. As he started buying vinyl and making music on Reason 1.5, his love of progressive house blossomed; listening to Global Underground mixes and James Holden’s Border Community on repeat. Always with an affinity for the strange, IDM artists like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre and BBC Radio One Peel Sessions received heavy stereo play also. Moving into the mid/late 2000’s you’d hear thumping tech and Swedish house at his gigs in Duluth and Minneapolis. In 2009, Shaun produced his first full length album. Towerwasher is composed of 9 songs that flow from one into the other, deep and progressive house with minimalistic and techno undertones. The HypeMachine and keytars & violin blogs with that slammin Ed Banger sound definitely influenced Shaun’s productions and Dj sets into the 2010’s.
Shaun left his home state of Minnesota for Brooklyn New York in 2010, which coincided with a vast expanding of perspective, intention and sound. He brought his analog synth and record collections with, despite the high price for square-footage in BK. After sacrificing his synths for a better neighborhood, he produced his second album in 2014. Tilwhipr Sanction is a journey across 16 very unique songs, from glitchy lofi beats to IDM, yet chocked full of his favorite house and techno styles.
Moving to Reykjavik Iceland in 2014, Shaun’s productions and gigs entered another expansive state, as he held several weekly Dj residencies at dance clubs and churned out self-released EPs every few months. His high-vibe dance floors gained a following, and many amazing nights were shared both under the midnight sun and northern lights alike. For the latter half of the 2010’s, Shaun bounced to NYC, then Berkeley CA, and ultimately back to Minnesota. Moving away from producing music in Ableton Live back to analog synthesizers and drum machines, Shaun focused on live performance techniques and grooves instead of pushing out finished songs.
Into the 2020’s… YouTube and Instagram streams became commonplace, where Shaun would share live performances on his varied (and constantly changing) synthesizer collection. Something about making music on the spot, live, and without recording it into an arrangement provided Shaun many opportunities to fall deeply into the present moment; feeling the sounds in his core no matter how fleeting they may be. As the world changed and virtual connections and experiences became more common, Shaun found ways to connect with many amazing people and ideas he otherwise wouldn’t have. As the many and diverse interests and aspects of Shaun’s life align, his music and sound reaches new heights and audiences everywhere. Now back in Europe, hailing from Tuscany Italy, his sound continues to evolve and find resonance with heaps of new peeps.
Shaun is very grateful for the many amazing people music has brought into his life, and is excited for all that have yet to come. He thanks you from deep within his heart for choosing to receive his music however you do.
